# The Call to Labor

The early church in olden days  
 Had a desire to tell  
 The sinner about Jesus Christ,  
 About Heaven and hell\.

Indeed, they were not perfect souls,  
 But yet they loved their Lord;  
 And strove to follow this command  
 In spite of peril and sword\.

The more people they converted,  
 The more the tension grew\.  
 The wicked rulers of the land  
 Did not know what to do\.

A lot of folks were burned at stake,  
 Some put in dungeons cold,  
 Because they spread the Gospel word  
 With faith and courage bold\.

These brave soldiers who suffered much  
 Were such bright lights indeed,  
 But to tell others about God  
 They still did see a need\.

Now many years since then have passed;  
 We Christians tend to say  
 “Be an example to the world;  
 You need not tell the way\.”

But if this point of view were true,  
 Then I would like to know:  
 As did the church in olden days,  
 Why doesn’t our church grow?

Is it that in America,  
 The fire has grown cold?  
 Since faith is good, why don’t we share  
 As did the saints of old?

In other lands this very day,  
 The fire is burning bright;  
 Because Christians are zealous there  
 And vigorous in fight\.

While we thank God for freedom here,  
 They praise their Lord on high\.  
 And thank Him that for Jesus’ sake  
 They suffer and they die\.

So as martyrs in other lands  
 Are shedding blood for God,  
 If we would also spread God’s Word,  
 Our blood would stain our sod\.

Is it a blessing from our God  
 That our country is free?  
 Or is it ‘cause we aren’t a “threat”  
 To the society?

Are we ashamed or have no time?  
 Dear friends, the time is nigh\.  
 If we don’t bring the folks to God,  
 The populace will die\.

So, in conclusion, friends, let’s take  
 The path that Jesus trod,  
 Showing lost souls, the narrow way,  
 That leads men home to God\.
